How to Build a Polygon NFT Marketplace

A Polygon NFT marketplace runs on Polygon PoS, an EVM chain where minting and trading an NFT costs a fraction of a cent. This guide covers the contracts such a marketplace uses, the Polygon details that differ from Ethereum, the build steps, and how Polygon compares with Ethereum rollups.

Matic, MATIC and POL

Matic Network renamed itself Polygon in 2021. The network's token was MATIC until September 2024, when Polygon began to replace it with POL at a rate of one to one, and POL now pays for gas and staking on Polygon PoS.

MATIC on the PoS chain converted to POL automatically. MATIC held on Ethereum is upgraded through a migration contract, and exchanges converted the MATIC they held for customers. Many old tutorials still say "pay gas in MATIC"; the gas mechanics have not changed, but a marketplace interface should say POL.

Polygon also ran a separate rollup called Polygon zkEVM, but Polygon Labs shut down the zkEVM sequencer on July 1, 2026, according to the zkEVM sunset notice. Today, a "matic NFT marketplace" or a Polygon NFT marketplace means a marketplace on Polygon PoS. The Polygon documentation lists current network details.

Why projects choose Polygon for NFTs

  • Low fees. A mint or a transfer usually costs less than one cent, so free claims, loyalty NFTs and editions of thousands of tokens stay affordable at that price.
  • EVM compatibility. Solidity, OpenZeppelin, Foundry, Hardhat and MetaMask work on Polygon without changes.
  • Brand programs. Reddit minted its Collectible Avatars on Polygon from 2022. Starbucks ran its Odyssey loyalty NFTs on Polygon until it closed the program in 2024. Reddit closed its avatar shop and in-app Vault wallet in late 2025, and existing avatars stay on the chain.
  • Marketplace and API support. OpenSea and the main NFT data APIs index Polygon.

Polygon details a marketplace must handle

Finality and reorgs

Polygon PoS used to have more chain reorganizations than Ethereum. The Heimdall v2 upgrade in July 2025 cut deterministic finality to about 2 to 5 seconds. The Rio upgrade went live on October 8, 2025. Rio lets validators elect one block producer for a span of blocks, with backups on standby, and Polygon says this design removes reorgs.

A marketplace indexer should still treat a sale or a mint as final only after its block is finalized, and it should be able to roll back events if a block is dropped.

Gas price spikes

Polygon fees are low but they change with demand, and gas prices have spiked during popular mints and spam waves. A marketplace can read current prices through a gas station API or the eth_feeHistory call. The team should test the mint flow at ten times the normal gas price.

Bridging NFTs to Ethereum

The Polygon PoS bridge locks an NFT on one chain and mints a mapped copy on the other chain. A withdrawal to Ethereum waits until Polygon submits a checkpoint to Ethereum, and the user then sends a second transaction on Ethereum to claim the NFT. Most Polygon marketplaces keep collections on Polygon and do not bridge. The cross-chain NFT marketplace guide covers marketplaces that move NFTs between chains.

Spam collections

Cheap minting leads to many spam airdrops on Polygon. A marketplace should hide unknown collections in user wallets by default and keep a list of verified collections.

Build steps

  1. Build a prototype on the Amoy testnet, which replaced the older Mumbai testnet in 2024.
  2. Deploy the collection contracts, or a factory contract that lets creators deploy their own.
  3. Integrate Seaport for listings, offers and order fulfillment.
  4. Build or buy an indexer with finality checks and a metadata cache.
  5. Add card checkout and embedded wallets if the marketplace targets buyers who are new to crypto.
  6. Have any custom contracts and the order-signing flow audited.

Ready-made software is compared in the guide to white-label NFT marketplaces, and marketplace features on any chain are covered in the NFT marketplace development guide.

Polygon compared with Ethereum rollups

Ethereum's Dencun upgrade in March 2024 added blob space, and rollup fees dropped as a result, so Base and Arbitrum now offer fees close to Polygon PoS fees. A rollup posts its data to Ethereum and inherits Ethereum's security, while Polygon PoS is a separate proof-of-stake chain with its own validators, and it submits checkpoints to Ethereum.

The layer 2 NFT guide compares rollups in detail, and the guide to NFTs on sidechains explains how a chain like Polygon PoS differs from a rollup.

Frequently asked questions

Is Polygon still called Matic?

No. The project has been called Polygon since 2021, and POL is now the gas token on Polygon PoS. The name Matic remains in old URLs and tutorials.

Can Ethereum NFT contracts run on Polygon?

Yes. Polygon PoS is EVM-compatible, so the same Solidity contracts deploy without changes. The team only adjusts gas settings and payment tokens.

Is Polygon PoS a layer 2?

Many people call Polygon PoS a layer 2, but it is a proof-of-stake chain with its own validators that submits checkpoints to Ethereum, not a rollup.

How much does it cost to mint an NFT on Polygon?

A mint usually costs well under one cent, though the cost rises when the network is busy and changes with the price of POL.
